Curriculum Approval Process for Peer Support Specialists

Pursuant to 908 KAR 2:220, 908 KAR 2:230, and 908 KAR 2:240, all peer support specialists are only required to complete 6 hours of continuing education annually. If the peer support specialist falls under 908 KAR 1:370—alcohol and other drug entities—then the peer support specialist is only required to complete 10 hours of continuing education in alcohol and other drug-relevant training annually.

The Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (DBHDID) will approve the following curricula for Peer Support Specialists (PSS): Adult Peer Support Specialist, Family Peer Support Specialist, Youth Peer Support Specialist, and Kentucky Family Leadership Academy, as established in the Kentucky Administrative Regulations.

The regulations provide the curriculum applicant with an understanding of the requirements for peer support specialists—both eligibility and training—and specifically speak to the elements of a "training curriculum" and the training requirements (testing of the trainee and evaluation of the trainers). View these regulations in Related Links.

DBHDID requires the use of this rubric and related documents to ensure providers' submission of all necessary materials. This will allow DBHDID staff to review the curricula in their entirety and make an approval decision or request supplementary materials in an efficient manner, within the period specified.

Pursuant to 908 KAR 2:220, 908 KAR 2:230, and 908 KAR 2:240, as of January 22, 2020, all training staff listed on the Single Curriculum Submission Summary must hold a current Peer Support Specialist certification in the state of Kentucky. This information will be checked in the DBHDID TRIS database for training requirements and compliance. Any trainers found to be noncompliant will have 30 calendar days from curriculum receipt to rectify any certification issues. After 30 days, DBHDID will consider the curriculum incomplete and a denial letter will be issued.

A sample curriculum, sample test questions and a sample evaluation are provided in the "Curriculum Approval Process" section.
