Crisis Stabilization Programs have become an integral part of Kentucky's array of services provided by the regional community mental health centers. These programs use state and federal funds administered by the Division of Behavioral Health for Kentuckians experiencing a mental health or substance-related crisis.

There are several models of community-based crisis stabilization that vary in their level of restrictiveness. Services in these models include crisis intervention, mobile crisis services, intensive outpatient services, intensive in-home services, crisis therapeutic foster care, crisis beds in existing residential facilities, and crisis stabilization units.

Crisis stabilization units provide short-term stabilization services (typically three to ten days). Most units comprise six to sixteen beds that serve either children and adolescents or adults. These units are alternatives to hospitalization and provide recovery in the community.
