Through contracts with the fourteen regional mental health and mental retardation boards, a full array of adult outpatient therapy services is made available on a statewide basis. Multidisciplinary teams staffed by various professional disciplines – including nursing, social work, psychology, and psychiatry – serve as the clinicians.

Individual and group therapy are available for adults and children to address diverse issues surrounding mental illness and substance abuse problems. Psychiatric evaluations and medication management are provided by licensed psychiatrists.

The Department encourages and supports the use of evidenced-based practices such as dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing techniques, Kentucky medication algorithms and other best practices in service delivery.
